Issuing a notice, the Embassy has said that, we regret to announce the closure of our Indian Embassy in New Delhi with effect from 23 November 2023. Afghanistan Embassy: Pressure from Taliban and Indian government
As per the request issued by the Afghan Embassy, the objectives of extending the visas for diplomats and changing the attitude of the Indian government could not be achieved by waiting for 8 weeks. Faced with sustained pressure from either the Taliban or the Indian government to relinquish control, the embassy faced a difficult choice. The embassy said that the decision to close the mission in India and transfer the custodial rights of the mission to the host country is in the interest of Afghanistan.
We the Indian people express our heartfelt gratitude.
It is said in the embassy notice that there is not a single ambassador of the Afghan Republic left in India. The ambassador is the only person related to Taliban who is present in India. It is up to the Government of India to decide the future of the AATA Mission. We are considering the option of keeping this bandh in check with the possibility of appointing the Taliban’s “envoy”. Further in the notice, “We the Indian people express our heartfelt gratitude for the lessons and help given to Afghanistan in the last 22 years.”
