Otunbayeva said that confining half of the country’s population to their homes is one of the world’s biggest humanitarian and economic crises and is also an act of national self-harm.
He said these steps would further isolate Afghanistan from its own citizens and the rest of the world. A carpet factory in Kabul employs many girls who previously attended school or universities. She is also joined by women who were earlier government employees and now spend their days weaving carpets. Hafiza was a first-year law student before the ban on women’s education was imposed in the country. “We are all like prisoners here, we feel like we are imprisoned in a cage,” he said.
