A few days before the Lok Sabha elections, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 in the Delhi Liquor Policy case. He is currently in the custody of the Central Investigation Agency. Meanwhile, the Congress alleged that the Income Tax Department has sealed his bank accounts, leaving him with no money to contest the parliamentary elections.

The UN comment comes after similar statements by the United States and Germany on the arrest of the Aam Aadmi Party chief.

A US State Department spokesperson said they were “closely monitoring” Kejriwal’s arrest and encouraging a “fair, transparent and timely legal process”. New Delhi summoned a senior US diplomat, registering India’s protest over the statement. Hours later, on Wednesday, the US reiterated the same stance, calling for transparent and timely legal processes.

The case against Arvind Kejriwal pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was later cancelled.
