Ankara: Turkish troops launched airstrikes in northern Iraq and destroyed 20 targets of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Turkish airstrikes hit PKK positions in Gara, Hakurk, Metina and Qandil, the country’s Defense Ministry said in a statement Sunday evening. The military operation came after two attackers attempted a bomb attack in front of the Turkish Interior Ministry building in the capital Ankara on Sunday morning, lightly injuring two police officers.
One attacker died after detonating a suicide bomb, while the other was shot dead by police. The Interior Ministry said one of the attackers has been identified as a member of the PKK and an investigation is underway to determine the identity of the other. Turkish forces frequently conduct ground operations, airstrikes and artillery bombardments against the PKK in northern Iraq, especially in the Qandil Mountains, the group’s main base. The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish government for more than three decades.
