Nearly 30 per cent of new global capability centers (GCCs) set up in India during the December quarter last year were in the semiconductor sector, indicating growing interest in leveraging the local talent pool in areas such as front-end design, performance testing, etc. Among recent additions in the semiconductor sector is Signature IP, a company founded in 2021 with a focus on advancing network-on-chip (NoC) technology. Leading this expansion are innovative companies like Signature IP, EdgeCortix and M31 Technology Corporation, each contributing unique expertise to the semiconductor ecosystem. Bengaluru and Hyderabad have emerged as major hubs for semiconductor GCC, hosting more than two-thirds of the total 55 centers and employing a specialized workforce of 50,000.

Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. Vaishnav also informed that CG Power – in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand – will set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. An investment of Rs 7,600 crore is expected in the Sanand unit. The plant that Tata will set up in Dholera, Gujarat will produce 50 thousand wafers every month. There are 5 thousand chips in one wafer. That means 25 crore semiconductor chips will be made every month. The plant in Assam will have the capacity to make 4.80 crore chips every day. The plant that will be built in Sanand, Gujarat will be able to make 1.5 crore chips every day.
