Airtel, Jio can soon withdraw unlimited 5G data plan

That companies will charge at least 5 to 10 percent more for 5G services compared to 4G from the second half of 2024. The move is aimed at increasing monetization and boosting revenue growth.

According to industry experts, both the telecom operators are expected to increase mobile tariffs by at least 20 per cent in the September quarter of 2024 to improve their ROI (return on capital employed) on 5G infrastructure investments and customer acquisition costs.

The other two telecom operators Vodafone-Idea and government-owned BSNL have not yet started 5G services in the country. Bharti Airtel, in partnership with Ericsson, has successfully tested Ericsson’s pre-commercial Reduced Capacity (REDCAP) software on the Airtel 5G network.

The test on a 5G TDD network using the 5G REDCAP test module in collaboration with chipmaker Qualcomm represents REDCAP’s first implementation and validation in India. Ericsson RedCap is a new radio access network (RAN) software solution, the company said.

That creates new 5G use cases and enables more 5G connections to devices like smartwatches, other wearables, industrial sensors, and AR/VR devices.
