America expressed concern over Canadian Prime Minister’s allegations against India in the case of murder of Sikh separatist leader.
“This decision (to expel a Canadian diplomat) reflects the growing concern of the Government of India over interference by Canadian diplomats in our internal affairs and their involvement in anti-India activities,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in New Delhi.
The US on Tuesday said it is ‘deeply concerned’ by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations about India’s involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in his country. The Biden administration also urged India to ‘cooperate’ with Canada in the investigation of the case.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar (45), chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and one of India’s most wanted terrorists, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen outside a gurudwara in Canada on June 18. There was a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on him.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau on Monday alleged the possible involvement of “agents of the Indian government” in the murder, while New Delhi rejected the claims as “absurd” and “motivated” by personal interests.
A US State Department spokesperson told PTI, “We are concerned about the allegations made yesterday by Prime Minister Trudeau. “We remain in regular contact with our Canadian colleagues.”
In response to a question, the spokesperson said, “It is important that the Canadian investigation moves forward and that the perpetrators are brought to justice.” We urge the Government of India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
“For the past several weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively attempting to establish credible allegations of a possible connection between Indian government agents and the murder of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” Trudeau said in a speech to Canada’s lower house of parliament on Monday.
