Seoul :US intelligence documents ‘leaked’ just ahead of South Korea’s president’s visit to the US have created an uneasy truce as the leaked documents purportedly include talks between senior South Korean officials on Ukraine. Such documents indicate that the US was keeping an eye on one of its major Asian allies. Significantly, since taking office last year, President Yoon Suk Yeol has placed a strong military partnership with the US at the center of his foreign policy to deal with the growing nuclear threats and military challenges from North Korea. The summit is going to be held on April 26, which is being seen as an important step regarding security commitment, economic and technology policies. Leaked documents posted online are said to be a breach of the US intelligence system. The two countries had “differences” in early March after the US requested South Korea’s National Security Council to provide ammunition to Ukraine, according to documents seen by The Associated Press. Humanitarian aid sent to Ukraine
South Korea is a rapidly emerging arms exporter and has a policy of not supplying arms to any country during war. Although South Korea has not provided arms directly to Ukraine, it has sent humanitarian aid and joined US-led economic sanctions against Russia. It’s no secret that allies spy on each other as well as their opponents, said Choi Jin, director of the Seoul-based Institute of Presidential Leadership.

Does South Korea also spy on America?
Choi said US ‘wiretapping’ activities are ‘things that everybody already knows,’ though it becomes a more sensitive matter when it is made public. He said, ‘I think South Korea also tries to wiretap American officials. People don’t like the word wiretapping. But in other words, it’s called intelligence gathering.”
