Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Vietnam for his first state visit in six years. Jinping is trying to strengthen ties between his communist neighbors. The visit comes three months after United States President Joe Biden visited Vietnam as major powers vie for influence in the Southeast Asian nation. Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry said Xi would meet with Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Vo Van Thuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

At the start of the visit, Chinese state media reported that Xi expected the two sides to have an in-depth exchange of views on “strategic issues important to the direction” of relations. It added that the leaders of the two sides will discuss international issues of common concern. and will also discuss regional issues. Vietnam has long adopted a “bamboo diplomacy” approach. Tried to maintain good relations with both the powers. It shares US concerns about Beijing’s increasing aggression in the disputed South China Sea, but also has political affinities and close economic ties with China.

Vietnam and China already share a comprehensive strategic partnership, with Vietnam having the highest diplomatic status. Hanoi and Washington upgraded their relations to the same level in September. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Xi’s visit would discuss raising China-Vietnam relations to a higher level. He said the agenda of the visit includes politics, security, practical cooperation, public opinion building, multilateral issues and maritime issues.

Despite close economic ties, there have been disagreements between the neighbors over boundaries in the South China Sea. China has expanded land reclamation in the South China Sea over the past decade, creating militarized islands with runways, ports and radar systems. Along with Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines and Taiwan, Vietnam also claims this area. During Biden’s September visit, Vietnam and the US jointly warned against “threats or use of force” in the South China Sea. In an opinion piece published in Vietnam’s Nhan Dan newspaper ahead of the visit, Xi wrote that the future of Asia is in the hands of no one but the Asian people.
