In 1965, Ellsberg was sent by the State Department to Vietnam to evaluate civilian peacekeeping programs. According to a New York Times report, Daniel stayed with war patrols in jungles and villages for the next 18 months. It was during his stay in Vietnam that Ellsberg realized the futility of the American war against Vietnam. In his 2003 book Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, he said that his two-year tour of duty in Saigon made him realize that the United States was in a war it would not win. Pentagon officials were putting together a 7,000-page report covering events related to US involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. Inspired by the nationwide anti-war movement, Ellsberg began to openly oppose the conflict and later resigned from RAND, where he had resumed work after returning from Vietnam. He then contacted his RAND colleague Anthony J. Russo Jr., and together they decided to photocopy the 47-volume Pentagon Papers. Ellsberg then contacted veteran New York Times reporter Neil Sheehan, whom he had first met during his trip to Vietnam. The Times released the first installment of the ‘Pentagon Papers’ on June 13, 1971.
Coup plan to overthrow South Vietnamese leader
According to the Pentagon Papers, US officials concluded that the US probably could not win the Vietnam War. If they were to be believed, President John F. Kennedy had approved a coup plan to overthrow the South Vietnamese leader. Henry Kissinger, who was then the President’s National Security Advisor, called Ellsberg the most dangerous man in America.
