How did the controversy start?
In fact, on April 5, Amul made a tweet and wrote that it will supply milk and curd products in Bengaluru. After this announcement, the Congress accused the BJP that it wants to destroy Karnataka’s brand Nandini. Congress called it a conspiracy to destroy Karnataka Milk Federation’s brand Nandini, after which the controversy escalated. Resentment started increasing among the people against Amul in Karnataka. Political parties also entered in this dispute. Congress hj accused BJP that it is doing all this to destroy the brand Nandini created by the farmers of the state. The opposition alleged that when the state has its own milk brand then why does it need Gujarat’s milk products? The opposition decided to take it to the common people and protests started across the state. Hashtags like Boycott Amul, Go Back Amul started trending on social media.
The government defended
After the uproar by the opposition, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the opposition was unnecessarily giving political color to the issue. He said that apart from Nandini, 18 different brands of milk products were being sold in the state, but no one was harmed. Congress is deliberately doing politics in the name of Amul. He said that to make Nandini the number one brand of the country, they are making them more competitive than Amul.
23 lakh liter milk supply
Karnataka’s largest milk brand Nandini supplies more than 23 lakh liters of milk every day. Nandini alone meets 70% of the milk consumption requirement in the Bengaluru market. There is also a huge difference in the prices of Nandini’s milk as compared to Amul’s. A liter of Nandini milk costs Rs 39, while a liter packet of Amul toned milk costs Rs 54.
