Appeal to the government to intervene to ensure the availability of coking coal

Coking coal and iron ore are the two main raw materials used for making steel through blast furnace. While iron ore is available domestically, coking coal is imported.
The domestic steel industry has urged the central government to chalk out a plan to ensure 161 million tonnes of coking coal, taking the country’s annual steelmaking capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030. Coking coal and iron ore are the two main raw materials used for making steel through blast furnace. While iron ore is available domestically, coking coal is imported. Sources said the Indian Steel Association (ISA) made a presentation at the sixth meeting of the Advisory Group for Integrated Steel Plants (ISPs).
The presentation was made before Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and other senior officials of the Ministry. Sources said it was agreed during this time that a future action plan would be prepared to explore the possibility of expanding the sources of coking coal including Russia, Mongolia, Canada and the US. The minister has asked the ISA to come up with a medium and long term strategy for utilizing the low grade iron ore present in the country.
