In a statement, the food ministry said Punjab will target 2.5 million tonnes of wheat, Haryana 1.5 million tonnes and Madhya Pradesh 2 million tonnes in the total wheat procurement target for the marketing year 2022-23 (April-March).
The government has set a target of 341.5 lakh tonnes of wheat procurement for the marketing year 2023-24 starting in April. Last year this figure was 187.9 lakh tonnes. This target was fixed in the meeting of food secretaries of the states to discuss the procurement arrangements. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra presided over the meeting. Wheat procurement had come down last year due to fall in domestic production and higher exports. According to the second estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, wheat production in the crop year 2023-24 (July-June) is estimated to be a record 112.2 million tonnes. Apart from wheat, the government has set a target of 106 lakh tonnes for rabi (winter) rice procurement in the marketing year 2022-23. The procurement of coarse cereals is estimated to be 7.5 lakh tonnes this year. In the conference, Food Minister Piyush Goyal urged all the state governments to implement ‘Smart-PDS’ at the earliest.
