Britain’s top diplomat said his country could officially recognize Palestinian statehood without waiting for the outcome of years-long talks between Israel and Palestinians on a two-state solution following a ceasefire in Gaza. Foreign Secretary David Cameron, speaking to The Associated Press during a visit to Lebanon on Thursday aimed at reducing regional tensions, said there could be no recognition as long as Hamas remains in Gaza, but it could happen if Israeli talks with Palestinian leaders continue.

Britain, the US and other Western countries have supported the idea of an independent Palestine existing alongside Israel as a solution to the region’s toughest conflict, but have said Palestinian independence should come as part of a negotiated solution. There have been no concrete talks since 2009.
