Jakarta : Foreign ministers of Southeast Asian countries are going to meet in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Friday, mainly to discuss the deteriorating situation in Myanmar. However, the agenda of the meeting focused on food and energy security and cooperation in finance and health. Myanmar is a member of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). However, this time the annual meeting in Jakarta is taking place without Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Wuna Maung Lwin.
Myanmar’s foreign minister has not been allowed to attend the meeting for non-cooperation in implementing the five-point agreement reached in 2021 between ASEAN leaders and Myanmar’s military ruler General Min Aung Heing. As part of the deal, Myanmar’s military leaders promised to allow the ASEAN special envoy to meet jailed leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Taking over the ASEAN chairmanship, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said last month that ASEAN countries would continue to contribute to the Indo-Pacific region to ensure peace and stability in the region and sustain economic growth. Widodo said, “We are facing the crisis of war this year, along with the economic crisis, the energy crisis and the food crisis. ASEAN will continue to be relevant to the people of the Indo-Pacific region.
