• In 1996, Zardari was arrested for the murder of his wife’s brother Murtaza. He was also accused of corruption. Zardari was released from prison in 2004 when he went into self-exile in Dubai, however, he returned to Pakistan when Bhutto was assassinated in 2007.
• After returning to the country, Zardari led his PPP party to victory in the 2008 general elections. Notably, he led a coalition that forced military ruler Pervez Musharraf to resign. In the same year, Zardari was also acquitted of several criminal charges.
