Hundreds of seriously injured people were taken to nearby hospitals and the UN human rights office said on Friday that more than 220 people had been arrested. “People have the right to express themselves freely and to assemble peacefully, even if that goes against the UN and others,” UN human rights office spokeswoman Raveena Shamdasani said on Friday.
The protest was organized by a sect called ‘Natural Judaic and Messianic Faith Towards the Nations’. Organizers had called for the demonstration to be peaceful, but images circulating on social media showed men and women in civilian clothes armed with sticks and stones beating a policeman bound and gagged on the ground.
In July 2022 also there were violent demonstrations against the UN MONUSCO mission in the Congo. The demonstrations at the time resulted in more than 15 deaths, including three peacekeepers in the cities of Goma and Butembo. Years of rebel conflict and recurring natural disasters have helped exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in eastern Congo. According to UN figures, some 5.5 million people have been displaced in the North Kivu province of Goma and neighboring provinces.
