At least 500 people were killed within a few days last year in a village by Malian security forces backed by foreign troops, the United Nations said Friday. The UN human rights office has detailed five days of violence in the village of Moura in central Mali, saying at least 500 people were killed.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk described the facts of the report as extremely disturbing. “Killing, rape and torture during an armed conflict amounts to a war crime and, depending on the circumstances, amounts to a crime against humanity,” Turke said. Mali’s administration said in March last year that their campaign had neutralized the influence of extremists and did not allow UN investigators to visit the village. According to the report, UN investigators analyzed satellite images and interviewed victims and witnesses to prepare the report.
