The Australian government will provide $3 billion to British industry to ensure the construction and timely delivery of nuclear powered submarines. The announcement came a day after the two countries signed a defense and security pact to better deal with challenges such as China’s growing activity in the South China Sea and the South Pacific Ocean.
Britain’s Defense Minister Grant Shapps said the submarine program was expensive but necessary. “Nuclear-powered submarines are not economical but we live in a more dangerous world than ever before where we see China’s increasing aggression, an even more dangerous world in the Middle East and Europe,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
