Ban on subsidies for fishing in remote waters: India
[ad_1]
India has demanded a ban on fishing subsidies in remote waters for at least 25 years in the World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting. It says such support measures have an adverse impact on environmentally friendly fishing.
India, speaking at a session on fisheries subsidies at the WTO here, also said that domestic fishermen follow environment-friendly fishing activities and any agreement on the sector should take into account the interests of the fishing community. The livelihood of these people depends on this.
“India urged member countries to impose a 25-year moratorium on subsidies for fishing or fishing-related activities in remote waters beyond their EEZ (exclusive economic zone),” an official statement said. ”
India said member countries should not ignore the harmful effects of subsidies on large-scale fishing and management of marine resources. Fishing more than 200 nautical miles from the coast is called remote fishing. India said that historically subsidies in the fisheries sector have led to overfishing.
But subsidies are also important for developing countries and small economies to develop and diversify their fisheries sectors, as well as to protect the food security and livelihood security of their fishermen. In the WTO meeting, member countries are negotiating an agreement on the issue of keeping subsidies within the scope of fishing.
