Dhaka, 6 January (HS). Four people died in a train fire in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka late Friday night. Many people have been injured in the accident. Police suspect that this is a case of arson carried out as part of a conspiracy. This incident has happened two days before the general elections to be held in the country and the country’s main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has boycotted the elections.

According to Dhaka Tribune, 4 people have died in a train fire in Gopibagh area of the capital. According to Assistant Fire Service Officer Rakibul Hasan, seven fire brigade vehicles reached the spot on Friday night and brought the fire under control. The fire had spread to four coaches of the passenger train Benapole Express. This train was coming from the coastal town of Benapole near the Indian border. The fire broke out around 9 pm local time when the train was moving towards Dhaka Railway Station. Four people died in the accident. According to the Railways, there were 292 passengers in the train.

Police suspect that the train was set on fire as part of a conspiracy. According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Mahiduuddin, this is a planned attack. He said that it cannot be said with certainty yet who the attackers are but they are well planned. He said that the attacker will be identified and brought to justice. This type of incident was carried out with the aim of scaring people and police officers.

General elections are going to be held in Bangladesh on 7 January. However, the main opposition party BNP is boycotting it saying that fair elections cannot be held while Sheikh Hasina remains the Prime Minister. The opposition parties are demanding general elections under a neutral caretaker government, while the ruling party says that there is no such provision in the country’s constitution. Foreign observers have reached Bangladesh for the general elections to be held in the country on Sunday, January 7, including Election Commission officials from India.
