Bangladesh demands UN official language status for Bangla

The United Nations has listed six languages as official, including English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic. Last year, during the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, an India-sponsored resolution adopted Bengali, Hindi and Urdu as non-official languages.
A senior Bangladesh minister on Tuesday demanded that Bangla be given the official status of the United Nations. The minister made the demand as Bangladesh observed Martyrs’ Day to remember the pioneers of the Bangla movement. Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the ruling Awami League and a senior minister, said, “We are once again demanding that Bangla be given an official UN status.” In 1999, the United Nations designated February 21 as International Mother’s Day. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Shahriar Alam said, “The UN administration will have to spend $600 million a year to incorporate someone new into its system.” I had said that Bangla should be given official status of the United Nations.
