Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took oath for the fourth term – Dainik Savera Times

Dhaka: The ruling Awami League (AL) won the general elections held on 7 January 2024 in Bangladesh. After this, outgoing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took oath of office on Wednesday for the fourth consecutive term. According to a news agency, Parliament Speaker Shireen Sharmani Chowdhury administered the oath to Sheikh Hasina and other newly elected MPs. Apart from this, oath was also administered to elected independent MPs and newly elected MLAs in the ceremony.

According to the gazette notification published by the Election Commission on Tuesday, the ruling AL won 223 out of 298 seats in the elections held on Sunday (January 7). This is the party’s fourth consecutive victory since 2009. Before this, the party had run the government from 1996 to 2001. That means, now AL government has been formed in the country for the fifth time. Sheikh Hasina is officially the longest-serving leader in the history of Bangladesh. The results showed that independent candidates won 61 seats, while Jatiya Party got 11 seats and other AL allies got two seats. Apart from this, another political group Bangladesh Kalyan Party won one seat.

The party-led alliance won a landslide victory with 225 seats. A senior official of the cabinet division told the news agency that AL will form his new cabinet on Thursday. The elections were held on Sunday amid widespread violence and arrests of leaders and supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The BNP boycotted the elections after the AL rejected their demands for an independent caretaker government to preside over the elections. The opposition party had also appealed to the people not to vote.
