Bangladesh security agencies on Sunday arrested a senior commander of a tribal insurgent group with suspected links to an Islamic militant organisation. A few days before their arrest, the group had robbed state-owned banks in the southeastern mountainous region and kidnapped a bank manager, officials said.
aThe Anti-Crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said that they have arrested Chiosim Bom, an important coordinator of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). “We found him hiding in a locked cupboard during a raid at his house on the outskirts of Bandarban city,” RAB area commander Lieutenant Colonel HM Sajjad told reporters in Bandarban.
The arrest comes as Army Chief General Shafiuddin Ahmed visited Bandarban where he said the military leadership has initiated action to eliminate the KNF.
According to reports, the bank manager was released after three days through mediation but the KNF’s action forced the tribal district council chief to suspend peace talks.
