Biden’s Vietnam visit: US President meets business giants

US President Joe Biden met with government officials and business leaders on Monday, the last day of his first visit to Vietnam. Biden will visit a memorial built in honor of his late friend and colleague Senator John McCain. McCain was imprisoned for more than five years during the Vietnam War. Biden met with Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh, who was also present at the meeting of business leaders with the US President. Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong hosted a formal luncheon for Biden.

Biden spoke of his administration’s commitment to strengthening Vietnam’s semiconductor industry and an open Pacific.Biden told the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of various companies, “My message today is very simple. Keep working like this. We need to develop and take forward our cooperation. We need to forge new partnerships.” The Vietnamese prime minister also stressed the need to expand cooperation and said the possibilities for expanding US-Vietnam ties are limitless. In his first trip to Vietnam, Biden announced several major deals, including US-based Boeing’s $7.5 billion deal with Vietnam Airlines to buy about 50 aircraft and Arizona-based Amcor Technology’s $1.6 billion deal in Bac Ninh province. The plan to set up a dollar factory is important.

Biden arrived in Vietnam on Sunday, where he met Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. China has territorial disputes with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei, as China claims territorial waters in other countries’ exclusive economic zones.
