Sydney (Uttam Hindu News): At least 64 people have died in the ongoing fighting between tribes in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Local media gave this information on Monday. Police in Wapenamanda, Enga province, have confirmed that 64 bodies have been recovered from roadsides, grasslands and hills in the area since fighting began on Sunday morning, according to local newspaper Post-Courier.
Security personnel said some bodies were still in the bushes, the newspaper reported. Earlier, Australia’s ABC news channel had reported in its report that at least 53 people have been killed in the tribal fighting and more people may be killed in the bush.
“This is the biggest (killing) I have ever seen in Enga, probably in the entire highlands, even in Papua New Guinea,” Acting Superintendent George Kakas of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary was quoted as saying. According to ABC News report, there are speculations that the same tribes are involved in the tribal fighting, which killed more than 60 people in 2023. Enga province, which faces increasing tribal fighting, was placed under lockdown for several months in 2023.
