Former Indian Navy personnel have now got a big relief after being sentenced to death in Qatar on alleged spying charges. According to the information given by the Ministry of External Affairs, the death sentence of 8 Indian people has been commuted. Let us tell you that last October, a Qatari court had sentenced 8 former Indian Navy personnel who were detained for more than a year, to death.
It is noteworthy that Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said a few days ago that India is in talks with Qatari officials on this matter. The Government will continue to provide all legal and consular assistance to former Naval personnel. In August 2022, Qatar detained eight former Indian Navy officers on suspicion of working as spies for Israel while they were employed at a company based in the Middle Eastern country. He was arrested by Qatar Intelligence Agency on 30 August 2022 from Doha. The bail pleas of the navy veterans were rejected several times by Qatari authorities. In October this year, Qatar’s first instance court had announced the death sentence. After which, after the intervention of the Foreign Ministry, a court in Qatar has decided to convert the death sentence of ex-servicemen to imprisonment.
