If Pakistani experts are to be believed, Bilawal knows that by going to the SCO conference, he can bring the tension between India and Pakistan in the eyes of the world. India neither wanted this 22 years ago nor does it have any such desire now.
What did Musharraf do
In the year 2001, the then President of Pakistan Musharraf came to India. When Musharraf visited India, both the countries had gone through the Kargil incident. Even at that time the tension between India and Pakistan was at its peak. In this 36-hour conference, both the sides did not reach any conclusion. Journalists covering the conference at the time said that Musharraf’s visit was just like a daylight cricket match in which the floodlights had been rendered useless. The conference may have proved unsuccessful but Musharraf was successful in gaining media attention. The media was not getting any kind of information from the Government of India. But his media team that came with the former President of Pakistan was fully prepared.
Musharraf’s propaganda became a hit
At the breakfast table, Musharraf held a 50-minute conversation with India’s top journalists on India-Pakistan relations. While the then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his team were not talking to the Indian media, Musharraf would sometimes be in front of the media at the Taj Mahal and sometimes talk to them at the hotel. The media team that accompanied Musharraf included military as well as diplomatic level officers. These officers used to give one or the other information to the Indian journalists.
It was not that Indian officials were not capable enough that they did not talk to journalists. Rather, they knew that no result was found in the conference which lasted for three days. Musharraf was completely successful in the intention and propaganda with which he had come to India. His team was telling Indian journalists everything which was actually a lie.
