The Nobel Prize-winning head of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) warned on Friday that if billions of dollars were not given to provide food to millions of people, the world would face mass migration, instability in countries and the next 12 years. Hunger among children and adults will increase during the 18 months to David Beasley praised the US and Germany for increasing funding last year and urged China and Gulf countries, billionaires and other countries to provide similar funding.
Beasley said he is deeply concerned that WFP will not be able to raise nearly $23 billion this year to provide food to 350 million people in 49 countries. “I would be surprised if we manage to collect even 40 per cent of this,” he said. Beasley made the comments ahead of handing over the reins of the world’s largest humanitarian organization, WFP, to US Ambassador Cindy McCain next week.
He said that China, the world’s second largest economy, had given only $11 million to the WFP last year. According to him, however, he has done a lot to reduce hunger in his country. China needs to be ready to join the multilateral world and provide important help.
