According to the new advisory of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), ‘VIPERJOY’ has weakened from a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm into a ‘severe’ cyclonic storm and has moved north-northwestwards during the last 6 hours. At present, it is 380 km south of Karachi and 390 km south of Thatta. The PMD said that the wind speed is 140-150 kmph, which can reach 170 kmph, and due to this, 30 feet high waves can rise in the sea. The cyclone is very likely to move northwards till the morning of 14th June after which it will recurve northeastwards and make landfall over KT Bunder (southeast Sindh) and Gujarat in India as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm by the afternoon or evening of 15th June. During this, winds can blow at a speed of 100-120 kmph. The government of Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh has given instructions to evacuate people on a large scale to safer places. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah told the media that an ’emergency’ has been declared and the army and navy have been called in to help move people on a large scale. He told reporters that social media, mosques and radio stations were giving orders to people to move to safer places. The Chief Minister said that massive evacuation operations are already underway in Thatta, Keti Bunder, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar and Umerkot districts. These areas may be affected by cyclone ‘Viparjoy’.
