The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Tuesday said it is preparing standards for emerging technologies such as blockchain. Along with this, BIS has clarified that it will not extend the April 1 deadline for making six-digit alphanumeric HUID mandatory for hallmarked gold jewellery.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Bureau of Indian Standards chief Pramod Kumar Tiwari said, “We make standards to promote ease of doing business. Our national standards are being aligned with international standards so that our external trade remains smooth. He said that out of 22,000 BIS standards, 8,000 are at par with international standards, including IEC standards for power sectors and ISO for non-electrical sectors. Standards included.

India is actively engaged in developing standards for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, brain computing interfaces and big data analytics, etc. He added that the country is internationally leading projects in these new areas, which will emerge as ISO standards in the future. On gold hallmarking, Tiwari said the government has set an April 1 deadline for sale of gold jewelery and gold artefacts hallmarked with only six-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) and will not be extended.

“We gave jewelers more than two years to dispose of the old stock. Now no further extension will be given.” He said a meeting was held recently with the jewelers’ body to mandatorily implement the six-digit HUID mark on gold jewellery.
