Brazil’s Supreme Court has rejected former President Jair Bolsonaro’s request to return his passport to travel to Israel. This information was given in an official document released here.
Bolsonaro’s lawyer said in a statement on Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited Bolsonaro to an event to be held in May. In such a situation, he had requested the Supreme Court to return his passport.
Supreme Court Justice Alexander de Moraes said in his decision, “It is too early to lift the ban imposed on a person against whom an investigation is ongoing.” The Prosecutor General’s Office said in its argument that Bolsonaro should be prevented from leaving the country. To stop him, his passport was confiscated.
The federal police conducted a raid against former President Bolsonaro and confiscated his passport in February. Bolsonaro is accused of plotting a rebellion to ignore the 2022 election results and keep the defeated leader in power.
