Johannesburg. South African diplomat Anil Sooklal says that ‘BRICS’, an organization of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, was formed to remove inequalities in the present global scenario. Souklal, ‘Ambassador at Large: Asia and BRICS’ at the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation, spoke on Radio Station 702 following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not personally attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg. Russia will be represented at the summit by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. However, Putin will deliver his address via video conference at the BRICS summit, which will take place between August 22 and 24. South Africa is the current chair of BRICS.
The International Court of Justice (ICC) has indicted Putin on charges of Russia illegally deporting Ukrainian children. South Africa, as a member of the ICC, is expected to be arrested if Putin sets foot in the country. “President Putin has decided not to participate directly in the summit of BRICS member states to be held in South Africa next month so that the issues can be debated without distractions,” Sooklal said. Putin’s decision to not attend the BRICS summit in person has put an end to South Africa’s dilemma about complying with the International Court of Justice’s warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.
Sooklal said there are challenges in different parts of the world and they are being addressed with the help of international laws. “But this is not being done uniformly but in a selective manner,” he said, adding that BRICS is trying to address this disparity. “That is why BRICS has come into existence to remove such disparities and create a contemporary and inclusive world,” he said. When we talk about international laws, it applies to all in an equal manner, not in a selective manner.
