The Russian leader is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant – a provision that Pretoria would be expected to enforce as an ICC member if it were to step down in the country.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the BRICS summit in South Africa next month. The President gave this information on Wednesday, ending months of speculation. Putin’s potential visit has been a complex diplomatic issue for South Africa. The Russian leader is the target of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant – a provision that Pretoria would be expected to enforce as an ICC member if it were to step down in the country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s spokesman Vincent Magwenya said in a statement that by mutual agreement, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit, but the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The decision comes after a series of consultations held by Ramaphosa in recent months. This will be the first BRICS summit to be held in person after the Corona pandemic. South African President Ramaphosa has expressed confidence that this summit will be successful. He called upon the delegates from different parts of the world to extend necessary hospitality.
BRICS is an acronym that began in 2001 as BRIC, coined by Jim O’Neill (a Goldman Sachs economist) for Brazil, China, India and Russia. Later in 2010, South Africa was included in BRICS. Goldman Sachs claimed that by 2050 the global economy would be dominated by the four BRIC economies.
