Surfside Beach (Texas, USA). Nearly two dozen teenagers on summer vacation were injured when a bridge collapsed on Surfside Beach in the US state of Texas on Thursday. Five of these teenagers have been taken to the hospital by helicopter.
Brazoria County officials said none of them were in serious condition. The exact cause of the bridge collapse at Surfside Beach, located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 97 km south of Houston, is not yet known and is under investigation.
Justin Mills, assistant chief of the Surfside Beach Volunteer Fire Department, said his department received an emergency call at 12:34 a.m. and set up landing areas for medical helicopters to land and take off near the scene.
Brazoria County Public Information Officer Sharon Trover said the victims were all between the ages of 14 and 18 and were from the Bayou City Fellowship summer camp. Of these, six were taken to the hospital by ambulance and about 10 were taken to the hospital in private vehicles. Video from TV station KTRK showed that the bridge was made of wood and led to a building.
