Britain’s King Charles III is seen in public for the first time since Buckingham Palace announced his cancer diagnosis. Meanwhile, his younger son Prince Harry, who abdicated the monarchy nearly four years ago, has arrived in the country to see his ailing father. Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Charles, 75, was suffering from the disease and postponed his public engagements to receive treatment.
Charles waved to passers-by as he walked the short distance to Buckingham Palace from his Clarence House home in central London on Tuesday afternoon. He and his wife Queen Camilla then flew by helicopter to his Sandringham estate in rural eastern England to begin his recovery. Harry was seen arriving at Clarence House shortly before the king’s departure. However, a royal source said there were no plans for Harry to meet his older brother, heir to the throne Prince William, during his visit to Britain.
William is expected to step in along with other senior royals to take over some of the king’s duties while Charles begins a series of outpatient treatments. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said earlier on Tuesday that the cancer had been caught early.
