London (Uttam Hindu News): Hours after being appointed as the new British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron spoke to his US counterpart Antony Blinken about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. In a post on Twitter late Monday, the UK Foreign Office said Cameron and Blinken “discussed the conflict in the Middle East, Israel’s right to self-defense and the need to stop the war to allow safe passage of aid into Gaza. “
“They expressed their support for Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s illegal war of aggression and reiterated the depth of the relationship between the UK and the US,” it said.
For its part, the US State Department said Blinken congratulated Cameron on his new role and that he also “underscored the continuity in the US-UK special relationship and its importance for regional and global security”. In addition to discussing the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, Blinken and Cameron also discussed relations with China, the department said.
It is noteworthy that as part of a major cabinet reshuffle, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday appointed Cameron as the new Foreign Secretary, replacing James Cleverley, who has taken over the post of Home Secretary. Cameron, who became Prime Minister in May 2010, stepped down in July 2016 after losing the Brexit referendum.
Indian-origin Suella Braverman was sacked as Home Secretary in Monday’s cabinet reshuffle after she wrote a controversial article in The Times newspaper criticizing the Met Police over pro-Palestinian protests in London. He ignored Downing Street’s advice to make changes to the article.
