Islamabad: Britain on Thursday announced the appointment of senior diplomat Jane Marriott as its next High Commissioner to Pakistan. She will be Britain’s first female British envoy to Pakistan. Prior to this appointment, Marriott was British High Commissioner to Kenya since September 2019. She will replace Christian Turner in Pakistan. Turner was the British High Commissioner to Pakistan from December 2019 and left Pakistan in January, completing his term. The British High Commission here said in a statement that Jane, the first female British High Commissioner to Pakistan, is due to take up her post in mid-July.

Marriott expresses happiness over appointment in Pakistan

Announcing her appointment, Marriott said she was thrilled to be appointed the next British High Commissioner to Pakistan. She said that Pakistan is a country she has visited twice before. Before becoming ambassador to Kenya, Jane Marriott was director of the UK’s Joint International Counter-Terrorism Unit. In that role he had responsibility for the overall design of the UK’s international counter-terrorism strategies, working with cross-government and international stakeholders.

Long work experience with Marriott

Marriott joined the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in 2001. He then held a number of roles in the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Marriott has served as Joint FCDO Director for the Middle East and North Africa. From 2013 to 2015, she was the ambassador in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen.

Has also worked in Iran, Afghanistan

Prior to this, she has held the post of Deputy and Acting Ambassador in Tehran. He has also served as an advisor to Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Marriott has completed two postings in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He was appointed OBE in 2004 for services to Al Amara, Iraq.
