When he commented on Snapchat he claimed that he was a member of the Taliban. “I am going to blow up the plane (I am a member of the Taliban),” said Verma’s message before departure from Gatwick Airport. A Madrid court heard on Monday that the message was picked up by UK security services on Gatwick’s Wi-Fi network,
Who then alerted the Spanish authorities, following which two Spanish F-18 fighter planes were dispatched with Verma next to the plane. The court was told that Verma, who was 18 at the time, was arrested and kept in a police cell for two days and was later released on bail.
In the UK, he was interrogated by the British intelligence agencies MI5 and MI6, before returning to his home in Orpington, Kent. Appearing in the court, Verma said the message was ‘a joke in a private group’ and ‘the intention was never to create public distress or cause public harm’.
The BBC report quoted him as saying, ‘It was just sent to my friends with whom I was traveling that day, it was just to make people laugh.’ However, Verma is facing terrorism charges or a possible jail sentence. If found guilty, he could be fined up to 22,500 euros (19,300 pounds). The court told the BBC that a verdict on Verma’s case was expected within a few days.
