British PM Sunak announces investment of 35 million pounds for grassroots cricket

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s love for cricket is no secret and he on Friday announced an investment of £35 million for grassroots cricket facilities and wider access to the game within schools. Sunak has often talked about his love for cricket and has described hitting a few balls with the England cricket team at Downing Street Gardens as a highlight of his tenure as Prime Minister. Sunak, a 43-year-old Indian-origin leader born in Southampton, expressed his desire to involve more than 1 million youth in sports by 2030. This investment will provide approximately 2,500 new pieces of equipment to each school participating in the program and is expected to help 930,000 students play cricket over the next five years.
Sunak said, “I love cricket, it is not hidden from anyone. I first experienced the magic of cricket in my childhood by watching Hampshire play at my local ground in Southampton. We are ready to host the Women’s and Men’s T20 World Cups. There is huge potential to grow the game even further and increase its reach for all people in all parts of the country.”
“That’s why I’m so proud that today we’re making a huge investment of £35 million (£35 million) in grassroots cricket to increase participation in schools,” he said. At the same time, healthy lifestyles can be encouraged and world-class, year-round facilities can be provided to local communities. This investment is for the next five years during which England and Wales will host the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
