British Prime Minister Sunak faced rebellion in Parliament over his ‘Rwanda asylum plan’

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had to face a rebellion from his own Conservative Party MPs in Parliament on Tuesday over his ‘Rwanda Asylum Plan’. Senior Conservative MPs have shown rebellion over Sunak’s plan to send UK asylum seekers to Rwanda.

It is a controversial and expensive policy that Sunak has put at the center of his effort to win the election this year. To implement this plan he needs to unite his party, which is far behind the opposition Labor Party in opinion polls.

The liberal and non-liberal factions of the Conservative Party are at loggerheads over the Rwanda plan. In a blow to Sunak, two Conservative Party vice-presidents said they would vote in the House of Commons this week to tighten the government’s key Rwanda security bill.

Lee Anderson and Brendan Clarke-Smith announced that they would support amendments to close the avenues of appeal for asylum seekers against deportation to Rwanda.

Another rebel and former immigration minister Robert Jenrick said only the ‘strongest action’ would create a ‘sustainable deterrent’ to would-be migrants. Britain’s main opposition parties have also opposed this bill.
