The British Sikh infiltrator who intended to assassinate Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Christmas 2021 was inspired by the ‘Star Wars’ series. This information was given to a court hearing the case in London on Wednesday. Jaswant Singh Chail (21) described himself as an “Indian Sikh”. He said in a video of himself that surfaced on social media soon after his arrest that he wanted to “kill” Elizabeth II to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. The trial in the case registered against him is going on at the Old Bailey court in London. The queen passed away in September last year.
The Queen was in her private apartment when Chail broke into Windsor Castle on the morning of 25 December 2021. Two officers, seeing the intruder in the palace grounds, rushed to him. He was wearing black clothes and a handmade metal mask. The intruder had told the authorities that he had come here to kill Queen Elizabeth II. Chail had a ‘crossbow’ (automatic bow) loaded with ‘bolts’. The officers immediately arrested him. According to the court report, Justice Nicholas Hilliard asked experts whether Chail was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the crime.
Prosecutor Alison Morgan said: “The main objective of the defendant was to destroy the identity of the British Empire in the UK and create a new empire and the center of this was the removal of the head of the royal family.” Morgan said, “Her thinking was partly inspired by the fictional world of Star Wars and the role of the Sith Lords in shaping a new world. He was also attracted to the fame he would get if his mission was accomplished. Chail was born in Winchester in south-east England to a family of Indian origin and lived in the village of North Badlesley in Hampshire with his parents, twin sister and older brother. Earlier this year, Chail had pleaded guilty under the UK’s Sedition Act in the same court. He is expected to be sentenced on Thursday.
