Ministry of Railways recently claimed that 170.56 km of ghat work has been done, but so far 45.40 km of girders have been launched. The estimated cost of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project is around Rs 1 lakh 8,000 crore. The government aims to start the trial run between Surat-Bilimora (63 km) by August 2026. This entire corridor is 508 km long. Its 156 km part is in Maharashtra and 352 km part is in Gujarat. It is likely to be fully operational by 2027. According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the bullet train will run at a maximum speed of 320 kmph and will cover the entire distance between Mumbai-Ahmedabad in just 127 minutes.

The project comprises 92 per cent high-speed elevated railway track through viaducts (460 km) and bridges (9.22 km), tunnels (25.87 km), embankments/cuttings (12.9 km). To the north, the Mumbai-Thane rail corridor passing through the eco-sensitive Thane Creek will be a major attraction. It includes the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. The corridor will pass through an undersea tunnel in the area to avoid disturbance to flamingos and other wildlife in the surrounding rich mangroves. It will be India’s first undersea tunnel with a tube of 13.2 m diameter and the longest rail transport route in the country.
This train will start from Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and reach Sabarmati station in Ahmedabad. It will pass through eight districts of Gujarat, three districts of Maharashtra and the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The bullet train will stop at a dozen stations including Mumbai-BKC, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati stations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then PM of Japan Shinzo Abe had laid the foundation stone of this project in September 2017.
