Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin the second day of his state visit to the US by participating in the 9th International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters. He will then depart for Washington DC, where he is set to attend a briefing hosted by Donald Lu, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia. The yoga session, to be held from 8 am to 9 am, will take place at the North Lawn of the United Nations Headquarters, where more than 180 countries will come together to participate in Yoga Day celebrations.

The headquarters is spread over 17 to 18 acres. The campus has several buildings including the secretariat, conference, general assembly building and library. The tallest of these is the 39-storey Secretariat Building, which is 505 feet high.

The United Nations buildings in New York have served a far greater purpose than simply providing office space for the bureaucratic system to function effectively and efficiently. Indeed, with President Truman’s announcement, there was pressure from the outset for the headquarters to serve as more than a physical presence. The world recognized the need for such an organization of world peace with the League of Nations after World War I, although it did not truly embrace and support this vision until the creation of the United Nations. From 22 August 1950, work started on the Secretariat building of the United Nations Headquarters. In which 450 employees were involved. Officially shifted to the United Nations Secretariat Building on 8 January 1951. At that time 3300 employees started working in it. It was completely completed in 1952.
