Toronto. A 19-year-old Sri Lankan student who was staying with six people, including a two-and-a-half-month-old baby, has been arrested for stabbing them to death in an Ottawa home. Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs said a “sharp weapon” or “knife-like object” was used by the suspect. He said the accused has been identified as Fabricio De-Zoysa and has been charged with murder and attempted murder. Incidents of mass murder are not common in Canada. Stubbs said that those killed in this incident were Sri Lankan citizens and they had recently come to Canada. He said the deceased included 35-year-old woman Darshani Banbarnayake Gama Walawe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, her seven-year-old son Enuka Wickramasinghe, four-year-old daughter Ashwini Wickramasinghe, two-year-old daughter Rinyana Wickramasinghe and two-and-a-half-month-old baby girl Kelly Wickramasinghe and 40-year-old Amarakoonmubiyansela Gay Gamini, an acquaintance of the family. Amarkoon is included.
The police chief said that when officers arrived at the scene, the father of the deceased children was outside the house and was pleading with people to call emergency services. Police had received two phone calls at 10.52 pm on Wednesday night. Police said that the father is also seriously injured and has been admitted to the hospital but his life is not in danger. “This is a senseless act of violence against innocent people,” Stubbs said. Sri Lanka’s High Commission said it was in touch with relatives of the victims in the country’s capital, Colombo. D-Zoysa was produced in the court on Thursday. The hearing of his case has been adjourned till March 13. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the country is shocked by the terrible incident of violence.
