External Affairs Minister Jaishankar had said that Canada’s response to the Khalistani issue appears to be constrained by its “vote bank compulsions”, and if these activities strike at national security and integrity, India will have to respond. He had said that the Khalistani issue has affected the relations between the two countries in many ways over the years. Jaishankar had said that India has been asking Canada not to give space to pro-Khalistani separatists and extremist elements.

Following the release of online videos of threats to Indian diplomats, Canada’s Department of Public Safety has said it is working to ensure the safety of all diplomatic representatives in the country. Along with this, the department said that there is no place for “inciting violence” in the country. This statement by ‘Public Safety Canada’ comes a month after Khalistani posters were circulated online. The names of Indian officers were written on these posters. Following this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had told allies Canada, Britain and the US not to give space to the “extremist Khalistani ideology” as it was “not good” for (mutual) relations. ‘Public Safety Canada’ said on the social media platform ‘X’, “There is no place in Canada to incite violence.”

Law enforcement agencies have been called in after videos circulated online of threats to Indian diplomatic officials. ‘X’ was formerly known as Twitter. It said last week, “Canadian law enforcement agencies and the government are working to ensure the safety of all diplomatic representatives in the country.” and termed the ‘propaganda material’ aired before the Khalistan rally as “unacceptable”. In June, India strongly criticized Canada after visuals of a tableau in Brampton surfaced on social media. The tableau allegedly celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
