Canadian man sentenced to nine years for killing Sikh youth

A Canadian man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the murder of a 23-year-old Indian Sikh in the province of Nova Scotia. This information was given in media reports. In September 2021, Prabhjot Singh Katri was stabbed to death by 21-year-old Cameron James Prosper outside an apartment building in the province’s Truro city. A Nova Scotia judge on Friday sentenced Prosper to nine years in prison for murder, The Global News reported on Saturday. Katri also worked in a taxi service company and some restaurants. He came to Canada from India in 2017 to pursue studies.

He was 23 years old at the time of the incident. Prosper stabbed Katri in the neck on September 5, 2021. In his judgement, Justice Jeffrey Hunt said the attack was unprovoked, although the intention was not to kill Katari, according to the report. Apologizing to Katri’s family, Prosper said, “I’m really sorry. Really sorry. If I could go back in time, I would have changed it.” According to the report, the maximum sentence for murder in Canada is life imprisonment, while there is no minimum sentence for the crime. After the verdict, Katri’s sister Rajveer Kaur said that the nine-year sentence was not enough. “We deserve more than this,” Kaur was quoted as saying in the news. The value of one’s life cannot be nine years.
