News reports said no reason was given for the undetermined diversion. Trudeau had reached Delhi on September 8 with his son Xavier for the G20 summit. He was to take off on September 10 (Sunday). However, his Airbus plane developed a fault, forcing him to prolong his stay in Delhi.

According to a Toronto Sun report on Monday, the Canadian Armed Forces had sent its CC-150 Polaris aircraft to pick up Trudeau after the plane by which Trudeau had come to Delhi was grounded due to technical problems.

The replacement flight, which was initially scheduled to pass through Rome en route to Delhi, was diverted to London. The plane will depart London on Tuesday morning (local time), the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said, citing a CBC news report.

Meanwhile, a Canadian government source told CBC News that a technician has been sent to India with replacement parts for the Airbus plane parked in Delhi. Trudeau can still board an Airbus plane if it meets all air safety regulations. But, if neither the Airbus plane nor a replacement flight is available, another jet will be sent to Delhi to pick up Trudeau and his delegation.

Previous troubles with Canadian Air Force aircraft

Notably, the CC-150 Polaris, which was headed to India before being diverted to London, is 36 years old and has caused problems in the past. In October 2016, the plane carrying Trudeau returned to Ottawa after taking off from Belgium for an official visit, CBC News reported.

In 2019, the plane was out of service for 16 months and a backup flight in December of that year was grounded in London when Trudeau was there to attend the NATO summit.

In October 2019, the plane collided with a wall while it was being towed into a hangar in Trenton, causing “significant structural damage to the nose and right engine cowling,” the Royal Canadian Air Force said.
