The Vatican’s press office said in a statement late Thursday that Vatican paramilitary police officers fired at the car’s front tire as it passed the entrance but the vehicle continued to drive.
It added that when the car reached the San Damaso courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, the driver was pulled out and immediately arrested. The Vatican said the driver was in his 40s and was suffering from a “serious mental problem”. It is not yet clear whether Pope Francis was near the scene.
