CCI issues show cause notice to Air India

In November last year, Tata and Singapore Airlines announced plans to become a single full-service carrier by March 2024. Both the companies had submitted a joint proposal for the merger plan in April this year. Tata, Singapore Airlines, Air India and Vistara had then said that there would be no change in competition due to Vistara’s merger with Air India and there would be no adverse effect on competition in the country. But instead of giving green signal to this proposal, CCI has decided to investigate it.

Tata holds 51 per cent stake in Vistara and Singapore Airlines 49 per cent. Singapore Airlines will hold 25.1 per cent stake in the merged entity, while the rest will be held by the Tata Group. After the completion of this merger, Singapore Airlines will invest $ 250 million in it. The company says that it will fund it from its internal sources. Tata AirAsia India is also merging with Air India Express. The idea of the company is to bring all the airlines under one roof.
